Prof Jason Gurney grew up in Te Tai Tokerau, and is of Ngāpuhi descent.  Jason is a cancer epidemiologist, and the Director of the Cancer and Chronic Conditions (C3) Research Group at the University of Otago. 

He leads multiple national-level projects on equity in health outcomes for Māori, including several that have directly focused on lung cancer
