Dr Ella Guy

CMRF Research Fellow at University of Canterbury, New Zealand

Dr Guy completed her PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2025 at the University of Canterbury. In her PhD (supervised by Dist/Prof Geoffrey Chase), she developed a method to track changes in airway resistance, lung stiffness, and muscular recruitment from measured resting tidal breaths.
Recently, she won a Marsden Fast-Start Grant (with mentor A/Prof Amy Chan and clinical collaborators Dr Paul Kelly and Lauren Wallace) to map tracked variables to disease presentations and progressions. With the overall aim of developing an accessible tool to track a person’s lung function over time to help people self-manage their or their whānau members respiratory disease from home. The prototype device is now in first stage clinical feasibility testing at Christchurch hospital.
